Situated just a 12 minute ferry ride from Auckland's main ferry terminal on Quay Street, Devonport is the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the CBD. With extinct volcanoes to climb, sandy beaches to relax on and charming shops and eateries to peruse - Devonport is a great place to spend a day.
Here are the must-do’s when visiting this gorgeous maritime village:
1) Marvel at the views from Mount Victoria
Whilst you can drive up the North Shore's tallest hill, we totally recommend the 15 minute walk to the Mount Vic summit. This way you can fully soak up the incredible 360 degree panoramic views - spanning from Rangitoto to the Harbour Bridge and the distinctive city skyline. Don't forget to snap a picture with the red and white 'mushrooms' at the top, which are actually reservoir vents in disguise!

2) Chill out on Cheltenham Beach
A short walk away from the Devonport ferry terminal, Cheltenham Beach is the ideal summer hang-out spot. This sandy stretch boasts marvellous views of Rangitoto Island as well as calm, clear water perfect for swimming. Grab a picnic (or some good old kiwi fish and chips), breathe in the fresh sea air and relax in the sunshine.

3) Get lost in the tunnels at North Head
At the far right end of Cheltenham Beach, you'll find steps leading up to North Head. En route to the summit, you can explore military tunnels, army barracks, bunkers and more as you delve deeper into the history of this region during WWI and WWII. Once again, you'll find some pretty epic views at the top - feast your eyes on the sheer beauty of the Hauraki Gulf and Waitemata Harbour.
