Lake Wakatipu

Queenstown - Wanaka

Explore the crystal clear waters of Frankton Arm, cruise alongside Cecil Peak and find the Hidden Island. Lake Wakatipu is an inland lake in the South Island of New Zealand. The Z-shaped lake was carved out by a glacier more than 15,000 years ago during the last ice age. It is in the southwest corner of the Otago region, near its boundary with Southland.

Lake Wakatipu comes from the original Maori word Whakatipu wai-maori. Fishing, jet boating, kayaking and paddle boarding are all popular on the lake. Be prepared though, the water temperatures are usually between 8-12 C, even during the warmest summer months.

Lake Wakatipu is the third largest lake in New Zealand and at 84 km long, it’s also the longest. Its name comes from Maori, Whakatipu wai-maori, which could mean 'growing bay' or 'bay of spirits', depending on the translation of the historic Southern dialect.
