My Favourite Places to Visit in New Zealand

With so many awesome places to visit around New Zealand I have compiled a short list of my personal favourites. East Cape Region – Now I’ve only been here once, but with it being the first place to see the sun in the world, rich with cultural and war-time history, plus being remote and stunning, I will definitely be going back. I fed stingrays there, saw Mt Hikurangi (the first mountain to see the sun in the world and a sacred place to the East Cape Maori tribes), carved a greenstone pendant from scratch and ate macadamia fresh from the tree. One of the best trips I’ve ever done. Orokonui Eco Sanctuary - a 35min drive from Dunedin, South Island featuring a large walking park with trails and many native birds. Viewing and keeper feeding. We saw a takahe and many kaka parrots. Tracks are well maintained and very beautiful. There are wild kiwi here and we found feathers on the tracks. Matapouri Bay, Northland – 30mins from Whangarei on the East Coast. Been going here since I was 4. Beautiful horseshoe beach with safe swimming, an estuary for fishing, a bridge to jump off and only one shop. Walks and good scenery abound. I also have family here who I love to catch up with a few times a year when I can. Baldwin Street – Steepest street in the world in Dunedin. Tourists abound. Photo opportunity.
